Moving from a web chat to an API introduces cost and security questions. Learn how the provider charges, and keep the key on the server.
How can you estimate one call?
If a service charges separately for input and output tokens, an estimate is: input tokens × input rate + output tokens × output rate. A provider may also charge for caching, images, tools, or minimum usage; this is a calculation framework, not a quote from any platform.
Record input, output, and actual billing for 10–20 real samples, then multiply by expected call volume. Leave room for failed retries, traffic spikes, and abnormal requests.
Keep keys out of the frontend
Visitors can read JavaScript in a static page and environment variables embedded in a build. Requests requiring a key should originate on a controlled server, with permissions, budgets, and rate limits. Revoke and rotate a key promptly if it leaks.
What should you check about a third-party platform?
- Does it clearly document supported models, interfaces, and limits?
- Can you view current prices, billing, refunds, and balance rules?
- Are documentation, status information, data policies, and support available?
- Are you authorized to use the relevant models and data?
This site provides a promotional registration link to one third-party platform, but has not verified its model list, prices, or availability. Complete the checks above; an article mentioning an API does not mean a particular platform suits you.
A fictional calculation
Suppose input costs 2 units per million tokens and output costs 8 units per million; with 1,500 input and 500 output tokens, one call is 0.003 + 0.004 = 0.007 units, and 10,000 calls are 70 units. This is arithmetic only, not a provider’s price, and excludes caching, tools, and retries.
Pre-production checklist
- Confirm interface permissions and authorization to use the data.
- Set a client timeout and finite retries to prevent duplicate requests.
- Validate input length server-side and limit each user’s usage.
- Review bills regularly and set budget alerts; monitor them yourself if the platform lacks alerts.
- Log error codes and request IDs, never complete keys.
